What is Serra (Supersonic Experimental and Recoverable Rocket Assembly) ?

The SERRA project will be launching the largest amateur rocket east of the Mississippi River. The one-stage rocket will reach a goal of at least 100,000 feet. The payload will consist of various electronics to record and analyze various data such as: altitude, barometric pressure, apogee, and velocity; the payload will also include a wireless color CCD camera that will be mounted in the nose of the rocket to transmit live feed during flight. Florida Institute of Technology will be working with Indiana Institute of Technology in developing the electronics for our payload. The rocket will be recoverable and have a control descent. The rocket will be boosted by a "Q-hybrid" motor with the assistance of Environmental Aerosciences Corporation. SERRA requires the involvement of mechanical, electrical, computer, and aerospace engineers to perfect each aspect of the project.  The main parts of this project include fundraising, preliminary design, finalization of the design, construction of aerodynamic models for wind tunnel testing, final construction of the rocket and its parts, and the launch procedures are set for Wallops Island Virginia at the end of March 2004. Last year’s JAMSTAR rocket raised the bar for high altitude rocket projects, and this year’s SERRA project intends to raise that bar even higher.
